Last week, I wrote asking for your help and suggestions for ways to get our kids involved in community events to teach empathy and kindness, here is our first wonderful local organization where you can get your young ones involved in giving back.
Birthdays For All is a non-profit that provides birthday presents to Charleston County Foster Children. Birthdays For All was founded by a local mom, Steffi Green, who while planning her children’s joint birthday learned of the dire state of foster care in the lowcountry. After a morning of scouring Pinterest for castle cake ideas she read a Post & Courier article about the state of Foster Care in the Lowcountry. After reading the article she went back to shopping for silver spray paint to make the cardboard castles look more realistic, but she could not shake the thought of the 283 foster children in Charleston forced to live in group homes because of the severe shortage of foster families. Steffi felt compelled to make sure that these children were celebrated on their Birthday too. She contacted Charleston County DSS and with their help getting wish lists and delivering the presents, Birthdays For All was formed. Since forming Birthdays For All the question she receives the most from Charlestonians is, “How can I help?”. Steffi compiled this list of 5 things you can do to help:

-
When your child’s Birthday is near talk to your child about foster care and ask if they would be willing to have their friends bring a gift for foster children or make a donation to www.birthdaysforall.org in lieu of gifts for your child.
-
Help Birthdays For All wrap the presents for the foster children. Please RSVP here to join us Sunday, July 26 at 3pm to wrap presents for all the foster children with August birthdays. Infants and children who can wrap are welcome as long as the parent stays.
-
Think of any skills you have (baking, face painting, card making) and e-mail us offering to help at a future event.
-
Donate to our organization. Every dollar donated goes to purchasing gifts for the foster children.
Birthdays for all is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and is 100% volunteer run. Please contact Steffi Green, steffi@birthdaysforall.org, with any questions you may have.
