Eating Gluten Free in the Low Country - pizza

June 9, 2015
As someone who has a major gluten sensitivity and many good friends who have celiac disease or love someone who does - I know how important it is to find a restaurant that is accommodating to those who have food restrictions.

This will be an ongoing segment as I am going to be providing information for the establishments in the low country  that I have had personal experience with.

let's start with...

Pizza

Your Pie
- West Ashley 975 Savannah Highway Ste 307 Charleston Sc http://www.yourpie.com/locations/charleston/

Your Pie is a fun, family oriented and kid friendly causal restaurant, you order at the counter and then sit to wait for your food - you can pick your choice of crust (for GF they will take it in the back to make it to avoid any cross contamination) sauce and toppings, the gluten free crust is thin and delicious and my favorite of those I have tried so far.  Kids also get a free small gelato with their pizza and the restaurant does a kids eat free night on Mondays.   I ordered the pizza pictured - gluten free crust with olive oil, feta cheese, artichokes, mushrooms and broccoli - it was fantastic!

Famulari's - Summerville - 1704 Old Trolley Road
Summerville, SC 29485  http://www.famspizza.com/

Famulari's  has two locations in Summerville, we visited the Old Trolley Rd. Location.  It is small but has a very welcoming atmosphere.  You order at the counter and then sit to wait for your food.  - Offers a gluten free pizza crust -for  an extra 99 cents and on 10 inch pizzas only - the crust is semi-thick and chewy - has good flavor and holds the toppings well.  We enjoyed our visit and will definately be back.

Mellow Mushroom - Downtown 309 King Street,
Charleston, SC 29401
  Summerville 1306 North Main Street,
Summerville, SC 29483

Mellow Mushroom offers a special gluten free menu
pizza crust and an area safe from cross contamination in which to make it.   The crust is vegan, thin and earthy tasting, gluten free pizzas are all priced the same as medium pizzas and are each on a 12 inch crust.

Additional Pizza places that have gluten free options include...

Andolinis - North Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley - offers a 10 inch gluten free crust
Baroni's - Mt. pleasant and West Ashley - they have a GF crust
Brixx - Mt. Pleasant - Gluten free crust for $2 extra, seprate GF menu and list of toppings which contain gluten
LDOB - James Island, Gluten free crust for an extra $2

(no in depth review because I have not yet tried them, stay tuned...)

Give these places a try and let us know what you think!
